INPEX Corporation is a Japanese integrated energy company primarily engaged in the exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas. The company's core business is upstream fossil fuel extraction, with operations spanning more than 30 projects across 20 countries. Its generation mix and emissions profile are benchmarked against its sector peers by the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI), a climate-focused investor group.
According to TPI's Carbon Performance assessment, INPEX's emissions trajectory and decarbonization plans are misaligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The company's current targets and projected pathway are not sufficient to meet the required benchmarks for limiting global warming. This places INPEX's climate governance and strategic direction behind many of its industry peers who have set more ambitious, science-aligned transition plans. The assessment indicates leadership has not treated emissions reduction with the urgency required for a company whose primary business is fossil fuel extraction.
