Environmental Harm (1)
2010 Current as of April 2026

This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Environmental Damage
Since Jul 26, 2021

SABIC is a global petrochemicals manufacturer, deriving the majority of its revenue from converting oil and natural gas into plastics and chemicals. Its operations have resulted in significant documented environmental damage. In 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a settlement with SABIC Innovative Plastics LLC for violations of the Clean Air Act at its Mount Vernon, Indiana facility. The company was cited for failing to properly monitor and control emissions of hazardous air pollutants, including benzene and ethylene oxide, from its chemical manufacturing processes.

The company’s expansion of plastic production on the U.S. Gulf Coast, often in partnership with firms like ExxonMobil, contributes directly to plastic pollution. A 2022 investigation by DeSmog detailed SABIC’s role in a massive petrochemical build-out in Texas, noting the facilities produce the plastic resin feedstocks for single-use products. This industrial expansion concentrates pollution in communities already burdened by the fossil fuel and chemical industries, with documented risks of toxic chemical releases.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.

This information is provided for educational and transparency purposes only and should not be relied upon as investment advice. Data is drawn from independent watchdogs, NGOs, government registries, and Ethical Capital's ongoing research — see Research Sources for the full list.
