Vedanta Limited operates a diversified portfolio of mining and smelting assets across India and internationally, with a documented history of significant environmental contamination linked to its core industrial activities. The company's copper smelter in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, was ordered permanently closed in 2018 by the state government following violent protests over pollution; a 2013 report by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute found the plant had contaminated local soil and groundwater with heavy metals including copper, lead, and cadmium. In Zambia, Vedanta's Konkola Copper Mines subsidiary has faced repeated legal actions and fines for acid spills that polluted the Kafue River, damaging aquatic life and local water sources. The company's aluminum refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha, has been the subject of longstanding allegations from local communities and environmental groups regarding the contamination of the Vamsadhara River and destruction of forest land.
