This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Emissions & Air Quality
Since Jul 28, 2021

SAIC Motor is a major Chinese state-owned automaker and one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers by volume. Its core business is the production and sale of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which inherently generates significant greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain. The company's emissions profile is substantial relative to its automotive sector peers, particularly as the global industry accelerates its transition to electric vehicles.

While SAIC Motor publishes annual ESG reports detailing climate governance structures and emissions reduction targets, its operational reality remains heavily tied to fossil fuels. The company's product portfolio is dominated by conventional ICE models, and its Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products constitute the vast majority of its carbon footprint. Although it has announced ambitions for carbon neutrality, its current trajectory and pace of decarbonization lag behind the most ambitious automakers, especially when measured against the intensity reductions required to align with a 1.5°C pathway.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
