This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Coal Operations
Since Dec 21, 2016

Kyushu Electric Power Co Inc (Kyuden) operates a generation fleet that remains heavily reliant on coal-fired power. As of its 2019 reporting, the company's thermal power portfolio, which supplies the majority of its electricity, is dominated by coal-fired generation. This reliance on coal as a primary fuel source places the utility among the most carbon-intensive power providers in Japan. The company's stated mission to contribute to an "environment-friendly lifestyle" stands in direct contrast to the ongoing operation and maintenance of its coal-fired assets, which are a leading source of greenhouse gas emissions and criteria air pollutants.

Environmental Damage
Since Apr 14, 2016

Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. was the lead consultant and engineering partner for the development of a 660 MW supercritical coal-fired power plant in Barauni, Bihar, India, as documented in a 2016 Detailed Project Report prepared for the Bihar State Power Generation Company. The company's proprietary involvement in designing and planning a major new coal-fired power station constitutes direct support for the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in a region already facing significant environmental pressures. While the project may have aimed for higher efficiency "supercritical" technology, its fundamental reliance on coal combustion contributes to long-term environmental damage through air pollutant emissions, coal ash disposal, and associated mining impacts. This activity represents a form of environmental harm through the active propagation of coal-based energy systems, which are a leading global source of toxic contamination and ecological degradation.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
