Its subsidiary Liberty Utilities stores pentachlorophenol-treated utility poles and crossarms outdoors at facilities in the Lake Tahoe basin, including sites in Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach, and South Lake Tahoe, California. A 2024 California Proposition 65 enforcement action documented that stormwater runoff, snowmelt, and soils at these facilities contain pentachlorophenol and associated chemicals — including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans, and TCDD — that pass into sources of drinking water, including Lake Tahoe and its tributaries. Liberty Utilities operates regulated electric, gas, and water utilities across multiple U.S. states and Canada.
