This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
Alliance Resource Partners LP is a major U.S. coal producer, deriving the substantial majority of its revenue from the mining and marketing of thermal coal. The company operates multiple mining complexes across the Illinois Basin and Appalachia.
This exclusion record was established based on its primary business activity in coal extraction. A full evidence review—including recent production volumes, revenue percentages, and any transition plans—is required to complete this narrative.
Alliance Resource Partners, L.P., one of the largest coal producers in the eastern United States, has accumulated $26.9 million in penalties across 940 violation records per ViolationTracker. Its subsidiary Excel Mining operated the MC Mining complex in Pike County, Kentucky, where in May 2011 local residents reported flaming drinking water wells — Calvin and Denise Howard documented their well water igniting and causing skin burns, with the company allegedly offering water filtration only in exchange for signed liability waivers. At the Dotiki Mine (also in Kentucky), state inspectors issued 31 closure orders for safety violations and an additional 44 safety citations since January 2009. In 2010 alone, Dotiki received 216 MSHA citations — by comparison, the Upper Big Branch mine that killed 29 workers received 458 citations the previous year. Alliance closed the MC Mining complex in 2024, issuing WARN Act notices to approximately 280 employees.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
