This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
Ashland Inc. (formerly Ashland Global Holdings) has a documented history of environmental contamination. On January 2, 1988, a fuel storage tank collapsed at Ashland's Floreffe, Pennsylvania facility, releasing approximately 3.9 million gallons of diesel fuel into the Monongahela River, contaminating drinking water for over 750,000 people in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Ashland was fined $2.25 million by the federal government — the largest fine levied on an oil company at that time — and charged with two misdemeanors for violating the Clean Water Act and the Federal Refuse Act. The company is also a named responsible party at multiple EPA Superfund sites, including the Ashland/Northern States Power Lakefront site in Chequamegon Bay, Wisconsin (contamination of soil, groundwater, and 10 acres of Lake Superior sediment with PAHs, VOCs, and heavy metals), the Ashland Chemical site in New York, and additional Ashland Chemical Company sites. Note: Ashland has since divested its petroleum and chemical distribution businesses and now operates as a specialty additives company (pharma, personal care, coatings), but the historical environmental liabilities remain.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
