This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
AdvanSix Inc. operates a 510-acre caprolactam manufacturing plant in Hopewell, Virginia — one of the world's largest single-site producers — that has been a serial air polluter for decades. The facility, inherited from Allied Signal and then Honeywell, has racked up 66 Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act violations across eight years. AdvanSix paid a $3 million fine to state and federal authorities in 2013 and a $50,000 fine in 2022. In March 2018, FBI agents, EPA criminal investigators, and Virginia State Police executed a federal search warrant at the plant as part of a criminal environmental investigation into emissions violations. EPA documented that AdvanSix violated Clean Air Act limits on nitrogen oxide, benzene, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter every month over a two-year period. The site is also under an EPA RCRA corrective action order, with 37 solid waste management units identified and ongoing groundwater monitoring for hazardous contamination from decades of chemical manufacturing.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
