Beijing Tong Ren Tang Chinese Medicine Company Limited is excluded due to its contribution to severe environmental damage through its supply chain. The company manufactures and sells traditional Chinese medicines that incorporate ingredients derived from endangered and protected wildlife species, including leopards and pangolins. A 2023 report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) identified the firm as one of 72 listed pharmaceutical companies using body parts from these threatened species.

The Council on Ethics for Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global concluded that Beijing Tong Ren Tang contributes to severe environmental damage. The finding was based on the company’s failure to provide adequate information about its sourcing of wildlife ingredients, which prevents an assessment of the ecological impact. When such data is not made available, the Council infers an unacceptable risk of driving species depletion and habitat destruction. This lack of transparency and accountability regarding critical supply chains led Norges Bank to exclude the company from the fund.
