This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Animal Exploitation
Since Jan 3, 2022

Benitec Biopharma is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing gene therapies for human diseases, a process that inherently requires animal testing for preclinical safety and efficacy data. The company's core platform involves DNA-directed RNA interference (ddRNAi) technology, which is tested in animal models as a standard step toward human clinical trials. In a 2007 patent litigation, Benitec's legal position acknowledged that animal testing for human therapeutic use was a necessary and expected part of the development pathway, with the court record noting the company did not challenge such use.

The business model of a preclinical biopharma firm is built on generating animal data to advance drug candidates. Benitec's own SEC filings state that product candidates require extensive preclinical testing, which includes studies in animals, before regulatory approval for human trials can be sought. While the company does not market animal-derived products, its fundamental research and development operations are dependent on the commercial exploitation of animals for testing, placing it under this general exclusion category. No public commitment to alternative, non-animal testing methodologies or a phase-out of animal use has been documented.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
