This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited operates one of the largest airline fleets in Asia, with a carbon footprint that significantly lags behind global aviation peers on key transition metrics. The company's emissions intensity decreased by only 4% between 2017 and 2019, before increasing again in 2020 and 2021. Its adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and progress toward industry-aligned carbon reduction targets remains insufficient.
The company has a history of opposing international regulatory efforts to curb aviation emissions. In 2012, Chinese airlines, including China Eastern, publicly opposed the European Union's emissions trading scheme for aviation. While the broader industry is setting net-zero commitments and investing in fleet renewal and alternative fuels, China Eastern's public disclosures and transition strategy lack the specificity and ambition demonstrated by leading peers. Leadership has not established emissions governance as a core, accountable part of its strategic agenda.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
