This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
Century Aluminum Company is a primary aluminum producer, operating smelters in the United States and Iceland. Its core business is the extraction and processing of bauxite ore into aluminum, a non-fuel mineral, placing it within the extractive industries.
The company has been linked to environmental concerns. In 2023, reporting highlighted that Horizon, Europe’s largest scientific research scheme, had awarded millions in funding to mining companies accused of ecological wrongdoing, with Century Aluminum among the named recipients. The company’s operations are closely tied to Glencore, which has been a majority shareholder and a frequent partner in ventures, including key smelting operations in Iceland.
Century Aluminum operates a primary aluminum smelter in Goose Creek, South Carolina, which has been the source of documented toxic contamination and regulatory violations. In March 2025, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services fined the company $360,000 for violating federal EPA regulations by emitting excessive fluoride and particulate matter. This followed a 2023 class-action lawsuit filed by Goose Creek residents alleging that emissions of particulates from the smelter caused physical harm, including respiratory irritation and itching.
The company’s environmental record includes a pattern of regulatory failures. The South Carolina enforcement order required Century Aluminum to begin rigorous recording of all inspection and maintenance checks within 30 days, indicating systemic operational lapses. These incidents demonstrate a failure to prevent environmental damage from its core smelting operations, resulting in direct harm to the local community and persistent non-compliance with air quality standards.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
