Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) is a vertically integrated agribusiness and one of Asia's largest producers of animal protein, with operations spanning poultry, swine, aquaculture, and processed foods. Its core business model involves the industrial-scale breeding, confinement, and processing of animals for human consumption.
The company is currently facing a class action lawsuit in Thailand, accepted by the South Bangkok Civil Court, seeking 2.4 billion baht ($70.9 million) in damages. The suit alleges CPF's importation and subsequent release of invasive blackchin tilapia caused significant ecological and economic harm to native fisheries and aquaculture operations. CPF has denied liability, stating it destroyed the imported fish after a failed experiment, and has separately filed a defamation lawsuit against the activist group Biothai for spreading what it claims is false information about the incident.
