Columbia Sportswear Company derives revenue from apparel and accessories that incorporate animal-derived materials such as wool, leather, and down. The company has faced public campaigns and investigations related to its sourcing of these materials. In 2018, following talks with PETA, the company announced a ban on mohair after an exposé of cruelty in the angora goat industry. In 2020, the company also banned alpaca fleece after a PETA undercover investigation documented workers tormenting alpacas. While Columbia Sportswear publishes an Animal-Derived Materials Policy stating it does not allow real fur and is committed to animal welfare, its core product lines continue to rely on materials sourced from animals.
