This resulted in the cancellation of over 5,000 flights on day one and paralyzed hospital systems (delayed surgeries/patient diversions). The U.S. Department of Transportation launched a formal investigation into the response, particularly regarding the prolonged failure of Delta Air Lines, which reported a $500M+ loss.
