This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
Eni S.p.A. is an integrated energy company whose core business remains the exploration and production of fossil fuels. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the company reported total oil and gas production of 1.839 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Its ongoing upstream activities include significant new hydrocarbon discoveries, such as a major gas find in the Adriatic Sea announced in 2023.
The company is facing legal action over its historical and ongoing role in the climate crisis. In 2023, environmental groups filed Italy’s first climate lawsuit against Eni, alleging the company used lobbying and greenwashing strategies despite internal knowledge of climate risks dating back to the 1970s. That case, which opened in court in February 2024, is assessing whether the company violated constitutional and international human rights protections. Further reporting in 2024 highlighted concerns that Eni’s use of sustainable finance bonds may be funding new hydrocarbon extraction, potentially undermining its stated energy transition goals.
Eni S.p.A. is a major integrated oil and gas company whose global operations have resulted in documented environmental destruction, particularly in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The company’s joint venture operations there have been linked to thousands of oil spills over decades, contaminating land, groundwater, and coastal ecosystems. This legacy includes toxic pollution from pipeline leaks and waste disposal that has degraded farmland, mangroves, and fisheries central to local communities' livelihoods and health.
In April 2020, the Italian competition authority fined Eni approximately $5.5 million for making misleading “green” claims about its diesel fuel, a case centered on the environmental impact of its products. The company is also a defendant in ongoing climate litigation in Italian courts. Plaintiffs, including environmental NGOs, allege Eni’s business plans are incompatible with the Paris Agreement goals and that the company has been aware of fossil fuels' impact on climate change since the 1970s. A 2025 ruling by Italy’s top appeals court allowed one such case to proceed, affirming jurisdiction over these claims.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
