This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
Eaton Corporation is a significant defense contractor, with military sales consistently estimated at approximately $1.6–1.8 billion annually. According to SIPRI data, this represented about 7.5% of the company’s total revenue in recent years. While this percentage is below the typical 15% materiality threshold, Eaton’s defense business involves specialized products integral to weapons systems, not incidental dual-use goods.
The company’s Mission Systems division manufactures components directly for major weapons platforms. For example, in September 2024, Eaton Corp./Mission Systems Davenport was awarded an $8.8 million firm-fixed-price contract for the manufacture of 1,584 components for the U.S. Department of Defense. Historically, Eaton’s AIL division has been a supplier of electronic warfare systems. The company has faced legal and regulatory actions related to its defense contracting, including a 1987 Air Force suspension of its AIL division from U.S. contracts due to falsified payment requests, and a 2012 trade-secrets case stemming from an FBI raid, where Eaton alleged a competitor used its confidential information to win contracts to supply gun-drive systems.
Eaton’s inclusion in the SIPRI Top 100 list of arms-producing companies, alongside its dedicated defense divisions and history of contracts for military-specific components, establishes that its military business is a material and targeted enterprise within its industrial portfolio.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
