This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Animal Exploitation
Since Jul 28, 2021

FutureFuel Corp. produces biodiesel, a significant portion of which is derived from animal fats. The company’s operations are integrated into the industrial animal agriculture system, which relies on the byproducts of large-scale meat production. By purchasing and processing animal fats, FutureFuel provides a revenue stream for factory farming and slaughterhouse operations, creating an economic incentive for the continued commercial exploitation of animals.

The company has been implicated in broader industry misconduct related to biodiesel production. In 2020, a $70 million False Claims Act settlement was reached in a biodiesel fraud case involving e-Biofuels LLC and other defendants for defrauding the EPA’s renewable fuel program. While FutureFuel was not a named defendant in that specific action, the case highlights the regulatory and ethical risks pervasive in the animal fat-based biodiesel supply chain. FutureFuel’s business model is fundamentally linked to the exploitation inherent in animal agriculture, with no indication of a transition away from animal-derived feedstocks.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.

This information is provided for educational and transparency purposes only and should not be relied upon as investment advice. Data is drawn from independent watchdogs, NGOs, government registries, and Ethical Capital's ongoing research — see Research Sources for the full list.
