FortisBC, a subsidiary of Fortis Inc., is the defendant in a greenwashing lawsuit filed in British Columbia Supreme Court in March 2024. The suit, brought by Stand.earth and local residents, alleges the utility's marketing of "renewable natural gas" and fossil gas misleads consumers about the climate impacts of its products. The legal claim centers on the assertion that this marketing deceptively aligns the company's business with provincial climate targets while the company continues to expand fossil gas infrastructure.
