Environmental Harm (1)
GMEXICOB Current as of April 2026

This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Environmental Damage
Since Jul 26, 2021

Grupo México’s mining and transportation operations have caused severe and documented environmental damage. In August 2014, a subsidiary’s copper mine in Sonora spilled approximately 40,000 cubic meters of copper sulfate acid solution into the Bacanuchi and Sonora rivers. The spill contaminated water supplies across seven municipalities, directly affecting over 24,000 people. Mexican authorities fined the company and ordered a cleanup fund, but local reports and follow-up studies indicate persistent contamination and inadequate remediation for affected communities.

The company’s environmental record extends beyond this single incident. Its operations have been linked to other contamination events and regulatory violations. For example, its Buenavista del Cobre mine, one of the world’s largest copper mines, has faced repeated accusations of polluting local water sources and farmland. This pattern of incidents points to systemic failures in environmental management and oversight within Grupo México’s extensive mining and infrastructure portfolio.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
