This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Jack in the Box Inc. operates a fast-food chain whose core menu is built on animal products, deriving significant revenue from the sale of beef, chicken, and pork. The company’s supply chain has been directly implicated in systemic animal welfare failures.

In August 2012, undercover video released by Compassion Over Killing documented employees at a California slaughterhouse mistreating cows, including non-ambulatory “downer” animals. Following the release of this evidence, Jack in the Box was among the major fast-food chains, including McDonald’s and In-N-Out Burger, that swiftly suspended business with the supplier. The facility had a prior history of violations; in 2008, a pen manager at the same slaughterhouse faced five felony counts of animal cruelty. While the company’s reactive suspension of ties demonstrates a recognition of supply chain risk, its business model remains fundamentally dependent on industrial-scale animal agriculture.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
