Knife River Corporation operates a mining and aggregate site in Crook County, Oregon, where residents have reported contaminated well water. A 2023 OPB investigation found state regulators dismissed these complaints and ignored possible permit violations. Residents have threatened to sue and have petitioned county officials to revoke the company's mining permit, alleging misrepresentation of the issues. While Knife River denies responsibility and states monitoring data confirms its work has had no impact, new data in 2025 continued to confirm well contamination in the area. Separately, in June 2025, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources fined Knife River Construction $10,000 for repeated violations of its emissions permit at a Sioux City facility.
