Kohl's Corporation has been cited for mislabeling real animal fur as faux fur in its apparel products. In 2014, Kohl's sold jackets advertised as containing "faux fur" that were found to be made from real raccoon dog fur. This followed a 2011 petition by The Humane Society of the United States to the Federal Trade Commission regarding widespread fur mislabeling in the industry, which led to subsequent enforcement actions.
The company's operations and supply chains are connected to industries with documented animal welfare concerns. While Kohl's states it works with suppliers on animal welfare verification, its product history links it to the fur trade, an industry where investigations have revealed practices such as animals being skinned alive and killed by anal electrocution.
