In 2016, a contract research organization working with Puma Biotechnology was cited for animal welfare violations, resulting in an unprecedented $3.5 million penalty levied by the USDA. This penalty, one of the largest ever for such violations, stemmed from findings of inadequate veterinary care and failure to provide minimally acceptable standards of housing and sanitation for animals used in research.
