This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
PT Astra Agro Lestari (AAL), a major subsidiary of Astra International, is Indonesia’s second-largest palm oil company. Its operations have been linked to significant environmental destruction, including deforestation that contributed to deadly flooding in Sumatra. In January 2026, Indonesian authorities stripped environmental permits from 28 companies for violations; Astra’s operations were among those cited in connection with the flood-related deforestation.
The United Nations special rapporteurs singled out PT Astra Agro Lestari in March 2025 for alleged human rights and environmental abuses. A 2019 report documented how the company’s plantation establishment and expansion has adversely affected Indigenous peoples' rights, leading to the loss of forest and livelihoods. A subsequent report examined AAL’s ongoing land conflicts with communities in Sulawesi and its failure to provide remedy for the harm caused.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
