This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.
Spirit Airlines operates an ultra-low-cost carrier model that is inherently carbon-intensive, deriving its greenhouse gas emissions almost exclusively from jet fuel combustion. The company’s own sustainability disclosures identify fuel consumption as its primary source of Scope 1 emissions. While Spirit highlights the fuel efficiency of its modern, all-Airbus fleet, its business model depends on high aircraft utilization and dense seat configurations to offer low fares, a strategy that increases absolute emissions as passenger volume grows.
The company’s public climate governance remains underdeveloped relative to sector peers. As of the latest available assessments, Spirit Airlines has not disclosed comprehensive, recent Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions figures, nor has it set a science-based emissions reduction target aligned with the aviation sector’s decarbonization pathways. Its public commitments center on incremental fleet efficiency gains rather than a strategic transition plan addressing its core carbon liability. In the absence of a published, quantified roadmap to reduce its carbon intensity, Spirit’s emissions profile and governance approach lag behind airlines with more robust climate transition plans.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
