Sinopec (China Petroleum & Chemical Corp) — primarily a Chinese state-owned refining and petrochemical giant. Downstream operations are the core business: refining capacity is among the largest globally.
China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) is a vertically integrated state-owned energy major whose core business is the exploration, extraction, and production of fossil fuels. The company is one of the world's largest refiners of crude oil and a dominant player in China's upstream oil and gas sector. In March 2024, Sinopec brought its West Sichuan Gas Field into operation, a major project designed to increase domestic natural gas supply. The company continues to advance frontier extraction technologies, announcing a significant shale gas exploration breakthrough in its Project Deep Earth in Sichuan in May 2025, aimed at enhancing production efficiency and expanding reserves. Sinopec's activities also include oil sands extraction to boost domestic oil production. There is no evidence of a strategic commitment to phase out its core fossil fuel exploration and production operations in alignment with climate science.

The Naughty List
A digest of changes to our exclusion list — new additions, removals, and the evidence behind them. We review the list continuously as new evidence surfaces.
Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
