SSR Mining Inc. is a precious metals mining company focused on the exploration and production of gold and silver. Its primary operations include the Çöpler gold mine in Türkiye, the Marigold gold mine in the United States, and the Seabee gold operation in Canada. The company's business model is centered on the extraction of non-fuel minerals, placing it squarely within the extractive industries sector.
On February 13, 2024, the Çöpler gold mine in Turkey, operated by SSR Mining's joint venture Anagold Madencilik, collapsed in one of the worst environmental catastrophes in modern Turkish history. A massive heap-leach pad, saturated with cyanide, gave way, burying nine miners alive beneath millions of tons of toxic sludge. The body of the final miner was recovered 116 days later. The incident was not a natural accident but the culmination of years of ignored warnings and corporate negligence, resulting in a major manmade disaster that contaminated the surrounding Sabırlı Valley. A class action complaint filed against SSR Mining centers on this tragedy, which critics describe as a direct result of corporate and political complicity.
