Environmental Harm (1)
TAANN Current as of April 2026

This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Environmental Damage
Since Oct 14, 2013

Ta Ann Holdings Bhd is a Malaysian timber and palm oil company whose operations have been linked to deforestation and environmental degradation. The company was permanently excluded from the Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) in 2017 due to unsustainable logging practices and deforestation risk. Its core business involves the conversion of forested land for timber extraction and palm oil cultivation, activities directly associated with documented habitat destruction and soil contamination.

The company has faced legal challenges over land rights in Sarawak, where it lost a case to native owners over customary land in 2016, yet attempted a second legal action the following year. Its subsidiary, Ta Ann Plantations Sdn Bhd, is cited in reports detailing the environmental damage from plantation development, which can render land unsuitable for other uses. While the company has received recognition for environmental contributions, this stands in contrast to the exclusion by a major sovereign wealth fund based on its assessment of unsustainable operations.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
