Extractive Industries
Since Nov 29, 2021

Teck Resources Ltd is a diversified mining company whose primary business is the extraction of metals and minerals, including copper, zinc, and steelmaking coal. In 2023, copper accounted for approximately 39% of its revenue, zinc for 25%, and steelmaking coal for 32%.

The company's operations have been subject to significant environmental enforcement actions. In March 2024, Chile's Superintendence of the Environment (SMA) filed charges against Teck's subsidiary Compañía Minera Carmen de Andacollo for multiple alleged environmental breaches at its copper mine. The SMA's investigation identified eight violations, including exceeding authorized limits for particulate matter emissions and failures in its dust control and monitoring systems. The regulator has proposed sanctions that could include fines, permit revocation, or even a temporary or permanent closure of the operation. This follows a 2022 incident where the same mine reported a spill of process water into a local ravine.

Environmental Damage
Since Oct 14, 2021

Teck Resources Ltd. has accumulated a documented pattern of environmental contamination and regulatory penalties stemming from its mining operations. In 2023, its subsidiary Teck Metals Ltd. was ordered to pay $2.2 million in federal and provincial fines for a 2019 acidic wastewater spill into the Columbia River. This incident is part of a broader record: in 2017, Teck was fined $1.425 million for three violations of the Fisheries Act, and its coal operations have been penalized millions more for 171 pollution breaches and treatment delays in Alberta.

The company’s legacy of pollution is entrenched. A 2023 report by environmental groups listed a Teck coal mine as the top polluter among British Columbia’s “dirty dozen” mines, citing ongoing water quality issues. Furthermore, Teck has faced long-standing litigation over the transboundary pollution of the Columbia River from its smelter operations, involving the dumping of hazardous substances. This history of spills, breaches, and fines demonstrates a recurrent failure to prevent ecological damage, placing it under continued regulatory scrutiny for environmental misconduct.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
