This page is part of our public exclusion list — a transparency tool that shows which companies we screen out and why. It is not investment advice, and it is not an accusation. But it is subject to change as our understanding of the facts evolves.

Downstream Fossil Fuels
Since Mar 13, 2026

TotalEnergies SE is a French integrated energy major operating refineries with a combined capacity of nearly 1.8 million barrels per day, primarily in Europe. Per TotalEnergies' full-year 2025 results, total refinery throughput reached 1,526 thousand barrels per day, a 5% increase over 2024. The downstream segment posted adjusted net operating income of US$3.8 billion and cash flow of US$6.2 billion for 2025, with Refining and Chemicals contributing US$2.38 billion in adjusted net operating income. TotalEnergies distributes refined products across 65 countries through an extensive retail fuel station network spanning Europe and Africa. Petroleum refining and fuel distribution remain core business segments despite the company's partial pivot toward renewables.

Midstream Fossil Fuels
Since Mar 13, 2026

TotalEnergies is the world's third-largest LNG player, with a global portfolio of 44 million tonnes per annum in 2025 and status as the number one exporter of U.S. LNG at approximately 19 million tonnes annually. The company operates an integrated midstream gas value chain spanning production, pipeline transport, access to over 20 Mt/y of regasification capacity in Europe, global LNG trading, and LNG bunkering for maritime vessels via a joint venture with CMA CGM. TotalEnergies took final investment decision on Rio Grande LNG Train 4, adding 6 Mtpa and bringing the plant's total capacity to approximately 24 Mtpa by 2030. It acquired Anadarko Basin natural gas assets connected to Henry Hub through existing midstream infrastructure. TotalEnergies is actively expanding LNG infrastructure on multiple continents, including projects in Qatar, Mozambique, and the U.S. Gulf Coast.

TotalEnergies operates oil and gas exploration and production projects in occupied Western Sahara and Myanmar, extracting natural resources in violation of international law governing occupied territories.

Upstream Fossil Fuels
Since Jul 28, 2021

TotalEnergies SE is one of the world’s seven supermajor integrated oil and gas companies, with its core business focused on the exploration, extraction, and production of fossil fuels. The company plans to increase its oil and gas production by approximately 3% per year, actively pursuing new offshore exploration permits, such as one awarded in the Congo Republic in 2025. This expansion strategy places the company on a continued fossil fuel growth course.

While the company reports a reduction of 1 Mt CO₂ from its oil and gas operations in 2025 and publishes sustainability reports, its fundamental business model remains centered on expanding fossil fuel production. Its planned production growth contradicts the International Energy Agency’s conclusion that no new oil and gas fields are compatible with limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

Companies appear on our exclusion list based on our investment judgment — not because they've done anything illegal. This is a difference of values and opinion, not an accusation of wrongdoing. Exclusion does not constitute a recommendation against investing in any company, and absence from the list does not constitute a recommendation to invest.
