Vertex Pharmaceuticals develops transformative medicines for cystic fibrosis, pain, sickle cell disease, and kidney disease. Animal testing is integral to its drug development pipeline as required by FDA for preclinical safety and efficacy. Vertex's CRISPR-based gene therapy exa-cel (Casgevy, approved December 2023 for sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia) underwent extensive preclinical animal studies.
