Morningstar India’s interview with Sloane Ortel explores her evolution from believing exclusively in index fund investing to becoming an active investor focused on ethical principles. Growing up with parents experienced in finance and capital markets, Ortel initially saw no reason for individual investors to choose anything beyond simple index funds. However, after coming out as transgender and clarifying her personal values — including that companies should pay their taxes, avoid preventable harm to living things, and care for the communities where they operate — she reconsidered her investment philosophy and founded Invest Vegan to pursue values-aligned investing with rigorous independent judgment.
