About this guide
Black Americans abroad navigate a different landscape than white Americans. Some destinations have established African diaspora communities, visible Black professionals, and relatively low racial friction. Others are racially homogeneous with documented incidents of discrimination, staring, or social exclusion. A few fall in between — diversity exists but is limited.
This ranking weights destinations by racial climate first, then cost. "Diverse" means an established multiracial population with visible Black community. "Limited" means some diversity but Black residents are uncommon. "High friction" means documented racial hostility or extreme homogeneity. Read each destination's full guide for specific context.
